i have been feeling urges to try some volunteer work, to do something with my time to help those less privileged than me.
since i left the jw's, which was quite a few years ago (faded), i've always felt something missing in terms of mingling with a group of people and doing something of a volunteer/charitable nature for others (that's not to say jws do anything charitable really, although some people have been helped to clean up their lives through joining their religion).
i think it would be tremendously fulfilling to try some volunteer work to fill the vacuum of wanting to do kind things for others, something altruistic.
Hej Yadda yadda 2,
I have found that working with women and children in crisis homes extremely rewarding...I help and give what I can..somedays we go for trips to the library with the kids other days we make food for over 40 and have a great time. I come home feeling I have given without any strings attached. That is such a good feeling as I often felt bad as a witness that I was supposed to help only if they progressed and came to meetings etc. It is funny that now I can switch off the witness feelers...and just give love and support and not worry about the response.
I am helping one victim of violence and her 4 small children, I shudder to think of what would have been expected of her if she became interested in the witnesses or they found her....
Find a local charity and start there...pebbles in the pond...spread ripples...you never know where it may end.

my anointed step dad always mentions about how the first century christians had a governing body also.
where in the bible does it actually say that?
to me governing body is just a dictatorship of men who think they are right and can control, no different than the governments....governing body set rules, and ultimately decide your future as far as i'm concerned.
Soooooooooooo. What happened to the so called governing body after the destruction of Jerusalem? Any ideas? The society keep quiet about that.
my father passed away last week.
it was not a sudden thing.
he was in his eighties and declining in health every time i saw him.
So sorry for your loss and for your childrens loss....it is understandable that you have such mixed feelings.
I have a garden were I have planted some lovely flower, rose bushes....these I view as my relatives...the birds that visit also. I find it soothing and makes me happy to think of them.
Much love
Chicken Little and family
hey ladies.
today i was at a luncheon for work and when i went to wash my hands, the sink countertop was all wet.
i grabbed some extra paper towel-one sheet only, and wiped off the excess water.
How funny!!
Just back from the hospital for some tests and I had done just what you said. I cleaned the sink and picked up the litter off the floor.
So the public have received some benefits from my jw days!! Haha...I also irritate the life out of my family in restaraunts when I tidy everything into a nice pile for the waiters to take......Stop it Mum you are embarrassing.....thats what I here all the time. Old habits do die hard!
i know this may seen an obvious question but i'm wondering if their downward financial situation is accelerating in the last five years.. we know of the large real estate sell-offs in brooklyn and their large bethel layoffs -- things they never report on in their publications.
pushing more and more of the traveling overseer expenses to the local circuit and congregations.
how they have taken a lot of shortcuts with regards their printing operations.
That is an interesting point relating to the so called donation of literature to Africa. The witnesses still charge for their placements of literature in Africa, so they are getting the money back maybe threefold. The local brothers probably also are told to donate for the literature before they go out and place it.
I remember questioning the whole "free literature" set up in the US and Europe...didnt the poor people in third world countries need it the most to be free? I was told they would not appreciate the literature if they got it free! That is such a joke, I see the magazines chucked in the bin and on the floor so often after the dubs have been out giving the magazines away! The whole donation set up was a tax scam and never understood by the rank and file.

my mom, dad, uncles, aunts, and grandparents were all raised catholic.
they were all baptised and married in the catholic church.. one day in the early 1960's,a witness preached to my uncle.
he started a bible study and later had his immediate family join in.
This is an interesting thread. I have my theories on why some people are so attracted to the witnesses. In our family it was my parents that studied in early 60s, they got baptized without any questions, my father never really fit in, he was too dominant and aggressive. My mother was c of e, disappointed because the vicar refused to christen me, I was adopted. Anyway my family were disfunctional and whatever we did would always be extreme. They all left the organization in the 70s....I was well and truly in by then as the witnesses had become my family, I was only 14, terrified of the big A and craving acceptance and approval.
I remember being told that Jehovah chooses those he wants to be his servants, I couldnt understand what went wrong in our family, he got it wrong I was sure. Yet when I met good people outside I kept thinking how come God wants my weird family and not them? I now realise that my parents limited education and need for absolutes as well as the run in with the vicar made them prime targets.
if you had to choose between wearing a magic dog collar that would allow you to live forever, or dying a natural death and perhaps having a hope of resurrection, what would you choose?.
here is the story.
please humor me and read before answering.. suppose you were told that all disease is caused by an electromagnetic imbalance.
That rings a bell...but then lots of witnesses found "truth parallels" in Star Trek....many were sure it was written by a brother incognito.

i don't mean just "upper middle class".
were you ever sent into a really really upscale neighborhood?.
Pioneered in Stanmore, Harrow in UK. Very high income area, many jewish people, Roger Moore had a house there at one time. Was invited in by a jewish lady who would not let me say who I was (I did try!). When she sat down in her chair and asked what I wanted I explained I was a Jw. She stood up and showed me to the door and said Goodbye. Very embarassing (I was 19 and green).
One educated wealthy woman was very insulting to my west indian sister friend, told us they had been teaching the bible while my friends relatives were still swinging in the trees! Harrow was a very uptight place including the congregation.
